The Categories of Perfume

Flowery Aldyhdic

Quite a soft fragrance, although the aldhydes give it a bit of freshness and sparkle. This fragrance is described very often as being powdery. Lets consider the Chanel No5, or Bvlgary Omnia Cristalline when thinking flowery aldyhyde.

Floral

The flowery category of fragrances is the largest and probably the most popular – in part because it can combine with other fragrance families very nicely. The notes include any or a combination of the following: jasmine, rose, gardenia, carnation, orange blossom. When we are considering flowery fragrance we can think Britney Spears Curious, Christian Dior's J'Adore and Gucci Eau de Parfum II.

Green

When you think of the color green and you relate it to a smell, sometimes one of the first things that comes to mind is that of freshly cut grass, maybe next would be pine or herbs. Green is a fresh fragrance with some sharpness involved. It is often mixed with other fragrances such as floral. Think Christian Dior Tendre Poison or Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca.

Citrus

Light, refreshing, uplifting and tangy – that's citrus for you! Citrus notes include the likes of mandarin, orange, lemon, petitgrain, lime, bergamot and tangerine. They are often combined with other scents such as chypre. Examples of citrus based perfumes are Clarins Eau Tranquility and Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune.

Oriental

The oriental fragrances contain a variety of notes including vanilla, wood, dark chocolate, musk, oriental resins. Very warm and sensual they can also be described as being mysterious and alluring. Examples: Yves Saint Laurent's Opium and Christian Dior's Poison.

Watery

Sounds a bit odd to have fragrances under the term of "watery" but this reflects to the ocean or to the smell of pouring rain – fresh! So we are talking aqua or if you like, marine notes. Fresh dew, sea breeze, this sort of thing. Issey Miyake, Bvlgary BLV Notte for examples.

Chypre or Woody

Mossy, woody or even hints of flower, thats chypre. The notes contain patchouly, sandalwood, vetiver, cedar and pine. Tenacious and rich, some examples of chypre perfumes are Donna Karan's Cashmere Mist or Guerlain's Samsara.
